These instructions are originally from here but I made some minor modifications b/c it didn't work using the original instructions. I tried installing the fuppes660.getdeb.deb package but I didn't get video support with it.

rsyslogd: could not open dynamic file ... - discarding message

ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS

error showing up in /var/log/syslog
"could not open dynamic file ... - discarding message"

/etc/rsyslog.conf parameter
     $PrivDropToUser syslog
     $PrivDropToGroup adm

fix: comment those two lines out and my syslog starting creating the files just fine. I didn't have to change the rsyslog permissions or anything else.

what's strange is the sources online said to do the complete opposite?!

evms_activate is not available - cryptsetup luks broken

ubuntu 11.04

I removed my encrypted swap from /etc/crypttab and /etc/fstab and next reboot caused a problem

evms_activate is not available

Here is what I did to fix it:

-boot of live cd into rescue mode
-vgchange -ay (activating my volume group)
-cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/mapper/vg-root   vg-root_crypt (unencrypting my lv root)
-mount /dev/mapper/vg-root_crypt   /mnt
-mount /dev/sda /mnt/boot (wherever the boot loader is)
-for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys; do sudo mount $i /mnt$i; done
-chroot /mnt
-dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
-dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic (whatever your latest is)
-grub-intall /dev/sda (wherever the boot loader is)
