Windows Vista - media center receiver service stopped working

A warning to anyone who cares... do not install this codec on Vista - Voxware RT29 MetaSound (75) codec

It will destroy windows media center and it will constantly crash with the error message "media center receiver service stopped working"

The only way to stop this is to manually delete all its files or run system restore. I tried this link - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936229, but the patch they offered didn't help either.

Mac on a stick
I found a nice article about getting Mac OS 7 on a usb stick (link) . I tried this awhile back but It didn't work out because every time I tried step 5 ( "Unpack the System_7.0.1.smi.bin") I got errors. I finally got it and put it all together so you can download it and skip steps 1 to 5, or skip all the steps 1 to 10.

This program is like ObjectDock but I prefer this one. Its also free, & much more responsive.

Pando is free P2P software that makes downloading, streaming and sharing large media files fast, easy and fun. Its like beamfile but you both don't have to be on at same time to transfer stuff. In my case, I cant always be reached for file transfers, and I don't leave the computer on so this was the best option. You share files, send to any recipient and it starts uploading right away. No waiting for other side to accept.

The bad:
  • Ads in the bottom screen
  • beamfile's interface is simpler

The good:
  • Upload to friendsemail recipients without waiting for them to accept
  • Downloads .torrent files too
  • works in Windows, Mac, & Linux (with wine, not supported by the company)

ZoomIt - Magnifier

I wasn't happy with windows magnifier and I'm surprised actually b/c Mac & Linux (w/ Beryl) have wonderful magnification capabilities. So long story short I found an OK solution. On the plus side, It lets you draw on screen too. On the negative side, It doesn't let you click or move anything while in zoom mode. If you don't like this program you can also try Virtual Magnifying Glass (portable), but I must tell you it too doesn't let you move anything while in zoom.

PeerGuardian 2 RC1 for Vista

PeerGuardian 2 is an IP blocker for Windows. PeerGuardian 2 integrates support for multiple lists, list editing, automatic updates, and blocking all of IPv4 (TCP, UDP, ICMP, etc), making it the safest and easiest way to protect your privacy on P2P.

I was trying to look for a Windows Vista version but it isn’t released for the general public.

I found it thou… hidden somewhere like nobody’s business ;)

TvuNetworks - Watch TV Online

TVU networks service is free to both viewers and broadcasters.
It shows you channels you can't find on your local cable or satellite system, such as news and sports from around the world.
TVU allows anyone to be a broadcaster (all you need is a PC and a broadband connection) so people are constantly creating new channels.
Last I checked I saw channels like Scifi,Nick,Fox,ABC & Comedy Central.
